Italy's Andrea Pirlo - - aptly nicknamed 'Mozart', 'Maestro', 'The Professor', among others - - has now retired from football.
With a sterling career spanning 22 years, Andrea Pirlo has now decided to hang up his boots - - for good.
Pirlo announced his retirement as his current team, New York FC, has been knocked out of Major League Soccer (MLS).
Pirlo led his national team Italy @Azzurri to capture the World Cup Title in 2006.
His time now comes to a curtain call, with an outstanding record of 872 games, 6 Serie A Titles, 2 Champions League Crowns, and of course, a World Cup Trophy.
Pirlo made his professional debut in 1995 and later played for Milan @ACMilan from 2001 until 2011, and for Juventus @JuventusFCen from 2011 to 2015.
In 2015, he joined Major League Soccer, signing up with New York FC @NYCFC.
Tributes pour from the world of football as Andrea Pirlo,38, now bids goodbye to the sport he played and loved.
His former team, powerhouse Juventus FC tweeted: "A true Genius of the Beautiful Game" @JuventusFCen .
And a former coach has said, "Pirlo changed football forever".
